Police Department

The newly established police department consists of a Police Chief, a sergeant, and two Patrol Officers.

The establishment of a police department in Fosston provides exciting new opportunities to serve the community and offers new abilities to work even closer with our business community, health care facilities, schools, and residents. Further, it provides additional coverage with a total of three officers dedicated to the City of Fosston.

The City of Fosston is committed to the safety of the residents and property owners in the City of Fosston and will work diligently to establish a department that will work with the community to provide safety, security, resources and improve the quality of life for all in the City of Fosston.

 BODY WORN CAMERAS 

With the goal of enhancing public trust and accountability to provide the highest level of professional service and transparency, the City of Fosston Police Department utilizes the advancement of technology. To further achieve this goal, body-worn cameras will be used for the purpose of documenting evidence and accurately capturing contacts between members of the Department and the public. The City of Fosston Police Department is committed to the utilization of body-worn cameras as a means to reach this goal.

Per Minnesota State Statute 626.8473 (Portable Recording Systems Adoption; Written Policy Required) https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/626.8473:

A local law enforcement agency must provide an opportunity for public comment before it purchases or implements a portable recording system. At a minimum, the agency must accept public comments submitted electronically or by mail, and the governing body with jurisdiction over the budget of the law enforcement agency must provide an opportunity for public comment at a regularly scheduled meeting.

To meet this requirement, the City of Fosston Police Department Policy (Portable Audio/Video Recorders) and the 2022 General Records Retention Schedule for Minnesota Cities are available for viewing below. Public comment, either by electronic means or mail regarding this policy will be collected from Thursday, June 16th through July 11, 2022, 4:30p.m.
