Public Works Department

Our Public Works Department maintains city streets, water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure, electrical and the natural gas distribution system.  Fosston owns the cable system as well as municipal garbage and refuse collection system.

These last few years we have seen our Public Works Department involved in several major, successful projects.

  • The Wastewater Pretreatment Facility has been completed and is taking wastewater.
  • Many customers have requested Natural gas to thier homes. The department has installed all desired natural gas lines. The lines are done in the fall of each year. Forms are avaliable at the Fosston Utilities Office.
  • In 2008 Fosston celebrated 125 years. Highway light poles were painted. Banners commemorating the event were sponsered by area businesses and hung along highway 2.

Each project is unique in that they all have different infrastructure requirements.  Natural gas and electrical installations require careful planning as well as water and sewer installation.

Besides working with the contractors on these projects, City Crews have the responsibility of the City's day-to-day operations that include:

  • Maintaining the electrical and gas distribution system;
  • Maintaining the Cable TV system;
  • Provide street maintenance including sweeping, snow plowing and sanding operations;
  • Provide sanitation collection services;
  • Special Friday pick-up of leaves and brush;
  • Street patching;
  • Repairing water breaks;
  • Maintaining the water system;
  • Maintaining the sewer system;
  • Regular testing of the City water supply as required by MDH;
  • Regular testing of the sewer system as required by MPCA;
  • Jetting sewers;
  • Flushing hydrants;
  • Meter reading;
  • Maintenance of public buildings and parks, including mowing;
  • Maintenance of the Municipal Airport;
  • Street light maintenance.

All of these projects are accomplished by our City Crew that consists of:

Director of Public Works
Assistant Director of Public Works
Street Superintendent
Linemen (4)
Utility Technician (2)
Sanitation Workers (2)
Maintenance Worker (1)
